Electric Storage Heater Grants
Storage heater grants are available to pay for the replacement of inefficient or faulty storage heaters. Brand new units are fitted that can be up to 30% more efficient. You will therefore make big savings on your electricity bills.
To qualify, you must own the property. You must have electric strorage heaters, not electric fires or portable heaters. You will also need to be in receipt of a qualifying benefit.
Landlords and private tenants no longer qualify for heating grants but we can still help with Green Deal finance.

What type of storage heaters qualify?
Storage heaters, sometimes known as night storage heaters, store heat during periods when electricity is cheaper e.g. at night. Heat is then released when required.
If your electric storage heaters were installed more than 10 years ago, or one or more of the units is faulty, you should qualify for a grant to have all the units replaced with modern, efficient units.
Electric fires portable electric heaters do not qualify for replacement under the scheme. Grants are also available to install full central heating.
Who Qualifies For Electric Storage Heater Grants?
To qualify for electric storage heater grants, you must be living in a private, domestic property i.e. not commercial, Council or Housing Association. Someone living in the household must be claiming at least one benefit.
A contribution towards the cost may be required, depending on the amount of work needed and how efficient the property is. This can be paid for through savings on heating bills via the Green Deal.
Qualifying Benefits
- Income Benefits
- Disability Benefits
- Tax Credits
If someone in the property receives one or more benefits, you should qualify for a grant to replace your old electric storage heaters with modern efficient units.
Note that combined annual household income limits apply to Child Benefit. See our Who Qualifies page for full details.

What if you don't qualify?
If you do not qualify for a storage heater grant, you could still be eligible for Green Deal finance. This is a type of loan without any upfront payment. The loan is paid back by using the savings you will make on your energy bills by having more efficient units installed.
How can EnergyLink help?
Once you have completed the form, we will allocate you to an approved local installer who has access to storage heater grants. They will contact you by telephone to arrange a free, no-obligation survey. If the property is suitable and you qualify for a grant, they will arrange the work and then claim the grant on your behalf.
